Dry Needling in Brief

A physical therapy technique that targets trigger points

Dry Needling involves inserting a thin, sterile, single-use needle directly into a myofascial trigger point — a tight, tender knot in the muscle that is often the source of local or referred pain. The needle triggers a brief reflex muscle twitch (a "local twitch response"), followed by relaxation of the muscle fibers, a temporary increase in local blood flow, and reduced tenderness and tension.

Unlike traditional acupuncture, which is based on the concept of energy meridians, Dry Needling is grounded in Western neuromuscular anatomy: each point treated corresponds to a specific muscle structure identified through clinical examination. In France, this technique has been regulated since 2017 and reserved for physical therapists with specific additional training — dry needling by physical therapists is also permitted in many U.S. states, so the technique may already sound familiar.
